I got this couples costume idea simply from craving soup dumplings. And first of all… I had NO IDEA how much I would be yearning for soup dumplings after moving out of NYC. I totally took for granted how close I was to Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown, so still looking around Tampa Bay for a close substitute. Any who… I needed a last minute Halloween costume and this is it! Y’all… this couple’s costume idea is so easy and requires no sewing!
I looked online for how to make a dumpling costume for adults, but most of them were just dumpling costumes for babies and pets! So I had to get really creative with this one.

Materials for dumpling costume DIY
- Ivory fleece fabric (I used 1.26 yards, super specific because that’s all that was left)
- Rope
- Grocery bags (HAHA, but TRUST! It gives you the volume without the heat and weight)
- Chopsticks for your hair
Now to make the dumpling halloween costume, see Tiktok below for the video.
- Fold the fabric in half and use scissors to cut a slit in the middle
- Shimmy through it with the long ends in front and back
- Take the rope and tie it tightly around the fabric and your chest
- Weave the fabric between the rope and tuck in the front and back
- On the sides, there will be holes, stuff in grocery bags until you’re satisfied with the amount
- Finish by tucking the sides around the rope
Okay now for the second half of this costume!
Kikkoman soy sauce costume:
- Black felt (I used 1 yard)
- Hot glue gun
- red and yellow card stock paper
- Cricut machine (scissors will do too!)

- Fold the fabric in half and cut a half circle shape, this is where you’ll stick your head through. I used chalk to trace the line to cut. I also slimmed down the fabric by cutting out around the arms.

- For the hat (or Kikkoman cap), I cut out strips of red card stock (ensuring its long enough will fit over your head) I used 2 pieces of card stock and hot glued them together.
- For the pour spouts, I cut smaller strips and hot glued the ends to make circles and then glued them onto the hat.

- For the letters, if using a Cricut, you can download this design I made and print.
- Or if using scissors you can print out the logo in reverse on your yellow card stock paper and cut.
- Line up your letters on your felt, when happy with that, hot glue it on!
And that’s it! Easy couples costume FTW!
