Closet Renovation – Part 1

Our bedroom has been one of the most neglected parts of our home. We lived without closet for 2 years, and it was finally time to do something about it! We debated whether to just replace the doors or expand the entrance by 2 feet since it’s hard to reach the sides since it’s so deep. Our original closet opening was about 46.5in, which is just shy of most bi-fold closet doors that are about 48in wide.

We decided to do the hard way and expand, increasing the closet to 60in wide.

After breaking down about a foot of wall from each side, we rebuilt the frames, drywalled and built a door jamb.

Everything started looking like a closet again after painting, but we had one final push left to install an IKEA closet system. Our room is only a 11×10, so having a dresser cut into a lot of our space. We decided to design a system with drawers and shelves, then installed 2 wooden rods on each side. We bought 2 of the 72in rods and cut them to size and stained them.

After cutting through the walls, the terrazzo under the walls needed to be repaired and refinished. We hired specialists who came in, color matched the stones and fixed the flooring all in about an hour!
