After going back and forth about whether or not to save our 1950’s pink bathroom or completely demo it, we’re now determined to save it! Since moving in 3 years ago, we didn’t do much to the bathroom other than replacing the vanity and toilet. Otherwise, the bathroom was totally original to the house. Unfortunately, the faucets in the bathtub had been severely neglected and plumbing degraded so we will need to replace some of the valves. The tiles are in pretty good condition except for a couple of the tiles having hairline cracks, chips where a shower door used to be and missing toothbrush and soap dishes by the vanity.

Things we will update:
- Replace the fixtures, valves and drain in the shower/tub. This requires having to cut into the tile since there is no access to the plumbing on the other side of the wall.
- New paint
- New curtain rod
- Regrout the tiles around the shower
- Deep clean and refinish the shower
- Replace the medicine cabinet mirror
- Replace the light fixture
- Replace the vanity (again) to be a little bit wider
Reasons why we decided to keep the pink tiles in our bathroom:
- “They don’t make it like they used to” rings true in this case. Our bathroom is the safest room in the house from any storm because the walls are pretty much impenetrable! The tiles themselves are thick and they are one with the plaster walls. These tiles were NOT meant to come down and so it would be great for having renters one day.
- We can save about $15K on a total renovation, which is a lot for a 5×7 bathroom!
- We only have 1 bathroom in our home, so completely demo-ing would require us to leave the house for about 4 weeks, adding to the cost of being displaced and finding a place to stay. Not to mention our cat would also need to come with us.
Stay tuned for the updates over the next couple of months. But in the meantime, here is our mood board!
